An explosion went off in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State on Tuesday, with many feared killed.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the explosion, which hit Aba road in Sabon Gari, also left many injured.

Kano State Commissioner of Police CP Sama’ila Dikko confirmed the explosion but said it was not a bomb blast.

“It wasn’t a bomb blast. It’s a gas cylinder explosion,” Dikko said.

“The seller’s shop is on the ground floor of the building where the school is located. So, when the cylinder exploded, it brought down the building and the pupils got injured. There wasn’t a bomb blast.”

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has called for calm in the area.

Ganduje in a statement issued by Commissioner for Information, Mohammad Garba, said the incident happened at an animal feed store opposite a school along Aba Road in Sabon Gari community.

Garba said while the damage is yet to be ascertained, an investigation has since commenced to determine the cause, impact, and measures to be taken.

He assured that the government would keep the public abreast of any development of the explosion and warned Kano residents to desist from spreading unsubstantiated news.
