A bus conductor died while four others sustained varying degrees of injury in a motor accident along Ihiala-Owerri Road, Anambra State.

The accident, which occurred around 5am on Tuesday, involved two vehicles, a white Zhongtong Luxury bus and another unidentified vehicle with 22 passengers on board.

An eyewitness, who was one of the passengers, attributed the cause of the crash to fatigue and loss of control.

“The driver was tired, slept off and lost control. He hit a vehicle in front of ours and crashed. The vehicle he hit sped off,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi said the deceased was the conductor of the bus.

He sympathised with the deceased family, and wished the injured victims quick recovery, just as he urged drivers to ensure they observed the regulatory rest period before plying the road.

He said:”A Fatal Road traffic crash occurred at Ihiala LGA by Ihiala-Owerri Road today May, 31 2022 at about 05:00hours.

“The crash involved 22 people, comprising 17 male adults and 5 female adults. One male adult (the conductor) was killed while four were injured.

“The crash was between two vehicles: an unidentified driver of a white Zhongtong Luxurious Bus with registration number: NNE423XB. Details of the other vehicle were not gotten.

“The injured victims were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital Ihialla and the dead victim deposited at same hospital morgue by FRSC rescue team from RS5.34 Ihialla Unit Command.

“The personnel managed traffic and ensured obstruction caused was cleared.”
