The Lagos State Government and the Atinuke Foundation have said early screening will help to treat and tackle breast and cervical cancer among patients.

The Cancer Control Coordinator of the state’s Ministry of Health, Dr Abosede Wellington, disclosed this on Saturday, during the Atinuke Foundation’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign held in Lagos.

Wellington said, “We still have a long way to go but for now, I know there has been a lot of emphasis by the Lagos State government especially on prevention and early screening. In a lot of our health centres, you can get free screening for breast and cervical cancer.

“If you have breast cancer at its early stage, it can easily be removed and treated. We have a lot on the ground in the country, we have a lot of private sector participation, many cancer centres springing up in the country and there are better opportunities for treatment now in the country.”

The founder of the Atinuke Foundation, Atinuke Lawal, said, “People should be encouraged to be present early at the hospitals and not wait till things get bad. For anyone who discovers anything, immediately do something, it is risky to delay.

“The foundation’s goal is to see that we have a cancer-free future; a situation where we will have a real decrease in the mortality rate because a lot of people die from cancer in Nigeria as a result of the myths surrounding it.”
