The National Working Committee(NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will on Monday meet to ratify the zoning arrangement for the sharing of presiding officers’ positions in the 10th National Assembly to be inaugurated in June.
This is coming on the heels of a meeting the leadership of the committee held with the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, where understanding and agreement were reached on the sharing formula for the six offices each in the two chambers of the National Assembly.
APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu last Wednesday told newsmen after an NWC meeting that the party was mulling a consensus arrangement in handling the 10th National Assembly leadership.
He also said that the party will be consulting widely with the President-elect to enable the party and all aspirants to be on the same page.
The Friday’s meeting also directed the party’s leadership to ensure compliance with the arrangement by all the aspirants in the two chambers of the National Assembly.
Those in that meeting were APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu; the two Deputy National Chairmen, Senator Abubakar Kyari (North) and Emma Enuokwu (South) as well as the National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore.
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo- Agege were also in attendance.
In line with the Friday resolution, The Nation gathered that the National Chairman has summoned an NWC meeting for Monday 8th of May, 2023. The meetings by noon at the party National Secretariat in Abuja.
Though the notice of the meeting sent to NWC members was silent on the agenda for the meeting, our correspondent however learnt from a top party official that the meeting has a one-point agenda for deliberations by the committee.
“This is a one-point agenda meeting. The Chairman is expected to brief the committee on the outcome of the meeting held with the President-elect on Friday on the zoning of the NASS leadership position and get the buying-in of NWC members to the arrangement.
“They (NWC) are expected to also consider a date for a meeting with all the major aspirants jostling for one position or the other in the two chambers of the National Assembly to ensure a rancour-free electioneering process in filling the leadership positions of the National Assembly,” our source informed.
The National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed the NWC slated for Monday but was unable to elaborate on the agenda of the meeting.
According to Morka, “Yes an NWC meeting holds on Monday at about noon.” But when asked if the zoning of the National Assembly leadership is slated for deliberations, he simply said, “The issue may be discussed, but no further information on that for now.
” You can be assured that we shall brief the press after tomorrow’s meeting,” he concluded.
