Alex Iwobi, a Super Eagles midfielder, has deleted all of his Instagram photos after receiving criticism on social media following Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast on Sunday.

The Fulham midfielder played 79 minutes before being replaced by Alhassan Yusuf.

He had been criticized in the tournament following his below-par performances, and football fans continued the abuses on Monday, a day after the setback, with many tormenting the 27-year-old on all social media sites.

A check on Alex Iwobi’s official Instagram account, which has 1.3 million followers by our correspondent revealed that he has deleted all his pictures, leaving behind only a promotional video.

This is not the first time Iwobi will be subjected to online abuse. In 2022 after the Super Eagles crashed out of the Nations Cup in the second round after losing to Tunisia, he and Maduka Okoye were abused on social media.

The abuse led to Maduka Okoye taking a break from the Super Eagles to focus on his mental health.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are expected to land in Abuja on Monday night after departing Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire in the evening.

Iwobi made his Super Eagles debut in 2015 against DR Congo in an international friendly match in Belgium.

He has represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2019, 2022 and 2023 Nations Cup competitions.

Iwobi has scored 10 goals in 74 appearances for the Super Eagles in all competitions.
