A witness said the incident happened around 10:03 am when the woman, who pretended to be buying some items at an open shop inside the market, allegedly picked a packet of Maggi and hid it inside her hijab.

In what will come across as a really startling development, a middle-aged woman, simply identified as Rabiatu, has been reportedly assaulted by a mob for allegedly stealing a packet of Maggi seasoning at Abaji main market on Wednesday.

A witness said the incident happened around 10:03 am when the woman, who pretended to be buying some items at an open shop inside the market, allegedly picked a packet of Maggi and hid it inside her hijab.

The witness added that another man selling items close to the next shop saw when the woman picked the Maggi and hid it.

“Actually, the woman earlier bought salt, sugar and Maggi but while the owner of the shop was busy attending to other customers, she picked another pack of Maggi and hid it not knowing that there was someone watching her,” the witness alleged.

He said the woman was about to leave the market when the alarm was raised by a neighbour, who was also selling items close the man, saying the woman denied picking the extra Maggi.

According to him, some women who were buying items at the shop were ordered to search the woman and, in the process, the packet of Maggi was found hidden inside her hijab.

He said the incident attracted attention of people, who tried to descend on her, but were prevented by the owner of the shop and some elders at the market.

City & Crime gathered that the woman later returned the Maggi and was set free after some vigilantes arrived the scene and led her out of the market.
