Anayo Modestus Onyekwere MFR popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo is a Nigerian veteran actor and lawyer.


In 2006, he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in the movie Family Battle.

1. Kanayo was born on 1st March 1962 in Ahiara, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State in the south eastern part of Nigeria.


2. Kanayo obtained a diploma in Mass Communication, a diploma in Law and a graduate degree in philosophy from the University of Lagos. He obtained a master’s degree in political sciences. He later on obtained a Law degree from the University of Abuja in 2018 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2020.


3. In 1982, Kanayo became a guest artiste at the National Television Authority (NTA) Enugu drama series and started appearing in soap opera and television series.


4. In 1992, Kanayo made his debut movie appearance in the film Living in Bondage.


5. He was nominated in 2008 for Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the movie Across the Niger.


6. Kanayo has featured in multiple Nollywood productions including Lion Heart and the sitcom Professor Johnbull, however, he is known for playing the role of a Villain in these productions especially in films relating to occultic practices.


7. His most recent movies are Up North, Living in Bondage: Breaking Free and others.


8. In 2018, he contested for a seat in the House of Representatives for Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency under the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance, but lost.


9. Kanayo has received the order of the MFR. He was among various Nigerians honored by the government in 2014 during the centenary celebration.
