Tragedy struck in Rivers State as an unidentified man met his demise while attempting to steal an armoured cable from a transformer in the Mgboaba/NTA axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The ill-fated incident unfolded around 3 am on Thursday, near a popular Pentecostal Church, amidst a blackout.

However, the thief found himself trapped when power was abruptly restored, leading to his electrocution.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing the transformer’s sudden spark and the subsequent loud sound upon power restoration.

The man’s body, severely burnt and blackened, bore testimony to the fatal outcome of his illicit endeavor.

According to one witness, the deceased, known locally for selling water in the area, succumbed to the lethal consequences of his actions.

Police authorities and officials from the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company promptly responded to the residents’ alert, recovering the man’s remains from the scene.

As investigations continue into the tragic incident, the State Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, pledged to provide further updates upon consultation with the Divisional Police Officer.

However, as of the time of this report, no additional information had been disclosed.
