In Apapa, Lagos State, a significant fire broke out at a tank farm, which the Lagos State Fire Service initially attributed to the facility of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

A video capturing the blaze circulated on social media early Friday morning.

However, NNPCL quickly refuted this claim, asserting that the fire originated from a pipeline at Honeywell Oil and Gas (HOGL) and not their depot.

The Lagos State Fire Service confirmed the incident occurred at a depot in Apapa. Amodu Shakiru, the Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, provided details during a phone interview.

Shakiru stated, “We received an emergency call from that area at 11:27 am,” and confirmed that firefighters were dispatched to manage the situation.

He elaborated, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is handling a fire outbreak at the new NNPC Terminal, formerly OVH, located on Kayode Street, Marine Beach, Apapa. The fire was caused by a petroleum product spill within the tank farm’s perimeter.”

Margaret Adeseye, the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Fire Service, mentioned that multiple emergency responders from the oil and gas sector were collaborating to contain the fire. She assured the public that efforts were underway to prevent the situation from escalating.

Conversely, NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye denied that the fire occurred at their depot.

He clarified that the fire was at HOGL, stating, “The fire is not at NNPC, but at HOGL. The fire has been extinguished at the Honeywell depot, not at NNPC.”

Soneye dismissed the Lagos State Fire Service’s report as “false,” emphasizing that the situation was under control at HOGL.
