Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, welcomed the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to his residence in Abuja on Thursday.
This visit comes just days after El-Rufai’s meeting with former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
Despite being a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), El-Rufai has been engaging with opposition leaders recently.
In March, he visited the national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja, disregarding any potential repercussions.
El-Rufai, who previously served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was poised to receive a ministerial role in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
However, his appointment was unexpectedly halted due to alleged security clearance issues, resulting in the Senate’s refusal to confirm him.
Following this setback, El-Rufai temporarily withdrew from the political scene and traveled abroad. Upon his return, he maintained a low profile until his visit to the SDP national secretariat, which stirred considerable speculation.
After El-Rufai’s recent meeting with Buhari, former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, suggested that these visits by notable northern politicians might be part of a strategy to challenge Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
