The Taraba State Government has suspended seven public secondary school principals for allegedly undermining the state’s free education policy.
Governor Agbu Kefas, who assumed office in May 2023, implemented the free education policy and committed to paying WAEC and NECO fees for students.
The suspension was announced by the Commissioner for Education, Augustina Yahaya. The affected schools include Government Day Secondary School, Jauro Yino, GDSS Kakulu in Zing, Government Day Secondary Schools Kofai and Salihu Dogo in Jalingo, GDSS Kununi in Lau, GDSS Jouro Yinu in Ardo-Kola, GDSS Kakulu in Zing, GSS Takum, and GDSS Yakassai in Wukari.
Mrs. Yahaya stated that the principals were suspended for actions aimed at sabotaging the free education policy. For example, the principal of Government Day Secondary School, Jauro Yino, was suspended for collecting money from students for NECO fees. Similarly, the principal of Yakasali in Wukari was suspended for collecting money and selling WAEC slots to external students.
The principal of GDSS Kakulu in Zing faced suspension for negligence, which resulted in 105 final year students being denied registration for their exams.
“We are a serious government and we will not allow uncommitted people to ruin our plans for education,” Mrs. Yahaya warned, emphasizing the government’s commitment to upholding the free education policy and ensuring accountability in the school system.
