Ezenwa Onyewuchi, the federal lawmaker representing Imo East Senatorial District, has switched his allegiance from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This defection was announced by Senate Majority Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele during Tuesday’s plenary session.

In a similar move, Salman Idris, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, also defected to the APC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Idris’s decision was officially announced in a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on the floor of the House.

Earlier that day, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, was admitted into the Senate chamber to witness Onyewuchi’s defection. This move brings the number of APC Senators from Imo State to three.

In his letter of defection, Onyewuchi cited internal crises within the Labour Party as the primary reason for his departure. He also stated that his decision aligns with constitutional provisions.

Following the announcement, Onyewuchi was warmly welcomed by APC lawmakers and took his seat in the APC wing of the Senate Chambers.
