A woman named Amarachukwu Happiness Nzekwe has been arrested for allegedly torturing her 13-year-old nephew with a heated laundry iron in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The arrest took place on Monday, August 19, 2024, after a video of the victim surfaced on social media, prompting action from the authorities.

The video caught the attention of Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in Anambra State, who immediately intervened.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, August 21, by Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the Commissioner’s media aide, the 38-year-old nurse from Ezinifite in Aguata LGA claimed that she had disciplined her nephew for allegedly stealing from her.

In a shocking confession, Nzekwe admitted to using a heated laundry iron to inflict injuries on the boy before locking him up without providing any medical attention. The incident has sparked outrage, particularly from Commissioner Obinabo, who expressed her anger and assured that justice would be served for the young victim.

The statement also noted that the suspect, who does not have children of her own, was responsible for caring for her nephew. As of now, Nzekwe has been handed over to the police for further investigation, and the case is expected to be brought to court.

This disturbing incident highlights the urgent need for stronger protections for children and a commitment to bringing perpetrators of such heinous acts to justice.
