Dele Momodu, the publisher of Ovation Magazine, has voiced his dismay over President Bola Tinubu’s national address, criticizing it for not meeting the demands of the ongoing protesters throughout Nigeria.
In a nationwide speech delivered on Sunday, President Tinubu spoke to the nation amidst the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, which started on August 1.
The protesters have presented several demands, including the reinstatement of fuel subsidies, better living standards, reduced government spending, lower electricity tariffs, and solutions to the growing insecurity in the country.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Momodu expressed his pessimism about Tinubu conceding to any of the protesters’ demands, noting that the speech left him stunned.
Momodu, a well-known social commentator and politician, highlighted that it would be challenging for Tinubu to deviate from the strategies that have been successful for him since his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State.
Momodu remarked that expecting the President to heed the protesters’ calls was overly optimistic and unlikely.
He wrote, “Good morning, fellow Nigerians. After President Bola Tinubu’s long-awaited speech this morning, I’m sure many of you share my shock.
“I must admit, I had little expectation that Tinubu would make any concessions to the discontented Nigerians. As a leader who has maintained a stronghold on Lagos State for the past 25 years, it’s difficult to see him changing a winning strategy.
“Furthermore, what advice could we expect from his advisers, many of whom are his staunch allies from Lagos who have always followed his lead?
“It was overly optimistic to think he would show compassion towards the distressed and seemingly powerless Nigerians.”
