Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has secured her place in the semi-finals of the women’s 200 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the preliminary round held on Sunday at the Stade de France, the 21-year-old athlete clocked a time of 22.24 seconds, winning her heat and finishing as the second-fastest overall.
Ofili’s performance in heat six was only surpassed by Gabrielle Thomas of the United States, who posted a time of 22.20 seconds in the second heat.
British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith finished second in Ofili’s heat with a time of 22.51 seconds, while Gina Bass of Gambia took third.
Ofili’s semi-final is scheduled for 8 pm on Monday.
Recently, Ofili has been vocal about her exclusion from Nigeria’s women’s 100m team, accusing the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) of failing to register her for the event. She criticized both organizations, claiming they “took this opportunity from me” and expressing doubts about their reliability.
On the same day, Team Nigeria will also see Kanyinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe competing in the men’s 100m semi-finals, with their heats set to start at 7:05 pm.
