The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reopened the slip road connecting the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway with Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange, following its closure during the rainy season.
The acting Director-General of FEMD, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, stated that the road, barricaded on June 25 to prevent flooding during heavy rains, has been reopened to improve traffic flow now that the rainy season has ended.
“The onset of the rain in Abuja is usually in the month of May, and the slip road is usually flooded every rainy season, hence the need to barricade the road,” Mohammed said. “To the glory of God, no life was lost in this area since 2020 because we made it a tradition to block the road during the rainy season.”
He expressed gratitude to residents and stakeholders for their cooperation during the period and announced the start of the 2024 dry season awareness campaign to curb frequent fire incidents in the FCT.
Mohammed advised residents to handle cooking gas, petroleum products, and electrical appliances with care. He urged them to keep cooking gas cylinders outside their kitchens and avoid storing petrol or other flammable chemicals in cars or homes.
He also recommended that residents equip their cars, homes, and offices with fire extinguishers to handle potential emergencies and exercise caution when burning bushes. He emphasized the need to monitor bush burning to prevent it from spreading uncontrollably.
Mr. Richard Dauda, Director of Engineering Services at the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority (FCDA), highlighted that the slip road is part of an older road network in the area.
Dauda explained that plans are underway to permanently resolve the flooding issue by reconstructing and elevating the road. He added that upon completion of the Galadimawa Interchange construction, a bridge would be built to replace the temporary culvert currently in place.
