The Kano State government, through the Kano State Board of Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), has taken a strong stance on tax compliance, sealing the head office of Max Air Limited for failing to remit over N190 million in Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and other liability taxes accumulated from 2012 to 2017.
Madam Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Director of Debt Management and Enforcement, revealed that Max Air had ignored numerous correspondences from the tax authority, prompting KIRS to secure a court order to seal the airline’s headquarters.
Max Air, owned by Dahiru Barau Mangal, who is connected to Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), now joins the list of companies facing government action for tax defaults.
This move is part of a broader enforcement campaign targeting businesses that have failed to meet their tax obligations.
Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company, located along Zaria Road, also had its office sealed for defaulting on more than N241 million in PAYE and outstanding withholding tax liabilities for the 2021–2022 period.
In addition, Northern Rice and Oil Milling Nigeria Ltd, situated at the Gunduwawa Industrial Estate off Hadejia Road, was similarly sealed for non-compliance with its tax duties.
Abdullahi emphasized that these actions are vital in ensuring companies fulfill their tax responsibilities, especially after multiple attempts to resolve the issue through correspondence.
“We went out to enforce payment of tax liabilities to make sure all liability taxes are paid as and when due as we have classification of taxes because our enforcement team found out there are discrepancies in the payment of the taxes,” he said.
“So, the agency found it necessary to take the measure in order to compel them to pay such taxes after several correspondences without positive responses from them,” he added.
