A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Benin City has sentenced P. Okugbuwa, a proprietor of private school, to six months imprisonment after he publicly insulted a parent, referring to her as a prostitute.
Magistrate Caroline Oghuma, who presided over the case, also handed down prison terms to three teachers from the school for negligence.
The charges against the individuals were based on violations of Sections 167(2), 412, 270, and 267 of the Criminal Laws of Edo State, 2022.
Delivering her judgment during the hearing, Magistrate Oghuma provided Okugbuwa the option of paying a fine of N100,000 instead of serving the jail term.
The three teachers faced charges of neglect and abandonment involving two students under their care.
Teo of the teachers received one-year prison sentences, which could be avoided by paying a fine of N100,000 per count. Their negligence had resulted in injuries to six-year-old pupil Salma Aigbudu.
The charges revealed that on September 8, 2023, at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters in Benin, Okugbwa acted in a manner likely to disturb public peace. He was accused of publicly calling a mother of the two pupils, a prostitute in the presence of her husband and bystanders.
