Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has pledged to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Oluyede assured Nigerians of his commitment to addressing the nation’s security challenges.
Oluyede revealed that he had given President Tinubu his assurance to intensify efforts in combating terrorism and other security threats.
A key focus of his strategy, he noted, is the eradication of the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has been a persistent menace in parts of the country.
Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, the COAS stated that strengthened ties with neighboring Niger Republic would play a crucial role in countering cross-border terrorism and dismantling the operations of militant groups like Lakurawa.
On his visit, he said: “It’s related to my appointment. I am here to reassure Mr. President that I will do my best to make Nigeria better in terms of security. And I’m going to explore doing this maybe in a different way.
“I’ll get some other results that will make Nigeria better. That’s my major aim of coming. And to seek his support, which he’s been doing over the years.”

The new Chief of Army Staff also spoke on his recent visits to military formations in the Northwest and Northeast.
“I was there to speak with my officers and soldiers, and to make them realise the need to bring all these forms of insecurity to an end.
“I made it clear that I expect better results going forward.”
On the cross-border dimension of Lakurawa’s activities, Oluyede said: “We are hitting them hard on the Nigerian side.
“What usually happens is that they flee to Niger Republic. Now that Niger is coming on board, very soon, Lakurawa will be a thing of the past,” Oluyede, the new Chief of Army Staff, assured.
