A devastating fire outbreak on Sunday claimed four lives in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area in Delta State, after a petrol tanker burst into flames.
The incident, which occurred near a FirstBank branch on Old Lagos/Asaba Road, left the community in mourning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker explosion caused widespread panic as the fire quickly engulfed nearby vehicles, buildings, and businesses. Many victims were trapped, with charred remains visible at the scene.
Videos shared online showed residents desperately trying to contain the inferno while awaiting the arrival of firefighters.
“It was a terrible sight. The fire spread quickly, and people were helpless. We tried to assist, but there was little we could do,” said Mr. Chuks Ogwude, an eyewitness. He urged authorities to implement measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Residents expressed frustration over the delayed emergency response and blamed frequent accidents on poor road conditions and the lack of proper monitoring of tanker operators.
“We have seen many accidents on this road because tankers are not properly monitored. The government must ensure safety measures are put in place,” said Mrs. Ebele Chiejine, a local resident.
While several structures and vehicles were reduced to ashes, emergency services and law enforcement agencies later arrived to manage the situation.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described the incident as “horrifying” and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. “It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families,” he said in a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon.
The governor confirmed that four people lost their lives and three others sustained injuries. He assured that the injured would receive adequate medical care and pledged support for the victims’ families.
“I have instructed the relevant agencies to provide the necessary support to those affected. We will ensure that families who lost loved ones are supported during this difficult time,” Oborevwori said.
The governor also lauded the efforts of the Delta State Fire Service, local residents, and security agencies in responding to the disaster, saying their bravery was commendable.
