Nigerian Army troops have reportedly launched a major assault on the camp of notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji, destroying critical resources, including a food storage facility, and allegedly killing one of his sons.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst specializing in the Lake Chad region, shared details of the operation on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

According to Makama, the operation—code-named Fansan Yanma—involved coordinated ground and air forces targeting Turji’s stronghold in Fakai, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. This area has served as a base for Turji and his associates for years.

“Key camps targeted in the offensive included Zangon Dan Gwandi, Zangon Tsaika, Zangon Kagara, and a school reportedly used by Turji to store food supplies and weapons. The military burned the school to prevent its continued use as a supply base for Turji’s network,” Makama reported.

Intelligence sources revealed that Turji’s group suffered severe losses in the operation.

“We killed his son and many of his fighters during the operation. I also listened to Turji’s panicked voice calling for reinforcements from seven other bandit leaders. None of them showed up, and one of his spies narrowly escaped from us today,” a source disclosed.

The operation is believed to have neutralized several of Turji’s key allies, including high-ranking members and possibly family members, further weakening his network.

The military’s intensified campaign against Turji comes amid growing pressure to dismantle terrorist enclaves in the North-West. Turji, described by the Military High Command as a “dead man walking,” remains a significant figure in banditry and terrorism, particularly in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger states.

Speaking about the ongoing operations, Maj. Gen. Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stressed the need to eliminate terrorist groups entirely to achieve lasting peace.

“The terrorists exist for the sake of war and must be destroyed for the sake of peace,” he stated, adding that sustained military pressure on their hideouts is critical to ending the conflict.
