The organised labour and one of the governors in the southern part of the country, Governor Alex Otti of  Abia State, on Friday, signed an agreement to resolve discrepancies in the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage.

At a brief signing ceremony held at the Government House in Umuahia on Friday, Governor Alex Otti emphasized that the deal was designed to ensure equitable salary adjustments for affected workers.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, reiterated the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, commending labour leaders for their patience throughout the negotiation process.

“We have remained focused on our vision for a better Abia. Now that this agreement has been signed, we expect every Abia worker to reciprocate with dedication and productivity,” Otti stated.

PlatinumPost  reports that the agreement seeks to rectify salary imbalances for civil servants on Grade Levels 8 to 17, which arose following the introduction of the new wage structure in October.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia State, Mr. Ogbonnaya Okoro, described the agreement as a significant achievement for workers and a testament to the government’s sincerity.

“Since Dec. 6, 2024, when the governor met with over 115 labour leaders, he had shown a strong commitment to ensuring that Abia workers received what is rightfully theirs,” Okoro stated.

He further disclosed that the state’s Head of Service (HoS) would soon issue a circular to facilitate the proper implementation of the revised salary structure for all civil servants.

The signing ceremony was attended by key government officials, including the HoS, Mr. Benson Ojiekere; Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Uwaoma Ukandu; Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and Senior Special Assistant on Labour Relations, Mr. Godson Anucha. Also present was the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Abia, Mr. Ihechi Enogwe, alongside other stakeholders.
