A 15-year-old girl, Yafalmata Alhaji Mustapha, has been arrested at the Charamari Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State for allegedly dumping her newborn baby into a pit toilet.
The tragic incident came to light when residents of the camp discovered the infant’s lifeless body around 6 a.m. on Thursday, prompting immediate action from security personnel.
Security sources confirmed that police officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene promptly to gather evidence and evacuate the infant’s remains to the Monguno General Hospital.
A medical doctor pronounced the infant dead on arrival while an autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.
The corpse was subsequently released to the Camp Chairman for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The police said investigations were ongoing to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Many residents in the IDP have expressed shock over the incident while also grieving over the death of her newborn.
