Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has made history by becoming the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church following his election on the second day of voting at the Vatican.

The 69-year-old is the first American to assume the papacy.

Although born in Chicago, Prevost has spent much of his life abroad, particularly in Peru and Rome. Known for his diplomatic skills, he is expected to engage effectively with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, though their views may differ on issues like immigration.

The newly elected pope has taken the papal name of Leo XIV.
