In a ceremony steeped in tradition and political symbolism, former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (Rtd), was turbanned as Walin Lafian Bare-Bari by the Emir of Lafia Hon. Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, CFR, signifying his growing stature within the socio-political fabric of Nasarawa State and the North Central region.
His wife Hajiya Rakiya Mohammed Adamu was also honoured with the title "Kwalliyan Lafian Bare-Bari", underscoring their shared legacy of service and influence.
The grand event which took place during the weekend was held at the Emir's Palace in Lafia, was attended by top political and traditional leaders, including the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State Aliyu Bello, the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Council Hon. Mohammed Hassan Ahmed and several royal titleholders.
Sidi while presenting the certificates of the Royal titles to Adamu and his Wife stated that the Walin Lafia title, one of the most revered in the Lafia Emirate, is traditionally bestowed on individuals who embody leadership, integrity, and commitment to the welfare of the people.
For Adamu, a retired police chief and public servant, the recognition comes at a time of strategic political recalibration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"This honour not only reflects his service to the nation but also signals his increasing relevance within the development of grassroots and traditional structures, " the Royal Father said.
The presence of high-ranking APC officials and community leaders further highlighted the event's political undertone.
A high ranking stakeholder of the APC who simply identified himself as "Nasiru" said that he believes the turbaning could position Adamu as a potential political force in Nasarawa’s evolving landscape as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
Guests who spoke to the SUN expressed that the conferment of titles also serves to strengthen ties between traditional authority and public service, a relationship that remains influential in Nigeria’s political process, particularly in northern states where emirate institutions continue to command strong loyalty.
The event was marked by pomp, pageantry, and cultural display, with thousands of well-wishers and community members in attendance.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, honours such as these are increasingly seen not just as ceremonial, but as strategic signals of political positioning and community endorsement.
