At least 10 people have been killed in a shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, according to Australian authorities, with reports indicating the attack targeted a Jewish Hanukkah celebration.
Police confirmed that 10 people were killed, including a man believed to be one of the shooters. A second alleged attacker was reported to be in critical condition. Authorities said a further 11 people were injured, among them two police officers.
Initial reports suggested two suspects had been detained. Later updates indicated that one suspect was among those killed during the incident.
New South Wales police said officers responded to what they described as a “developing incident” after multiple gunshots were heard at the popular beachfront location.
The public was urged to avoid the area, seek shelter if nearby, and follow police instructions as the operation remained ongoing.
The attack appeared to take place during an event marking the first day of Hanukkah on Sunday.
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News the shooting occurred during what he described as a joyful community gathering and said his media adviser was wounded.
“This is the Jewish community at its best coming together to mark a happy occasion. If we were targeted deliberately in this way, it’s something of a scale that none of us could have ever fathomed. It’s a horrific thing,” he said.
Videos circulating on social media platform X appeared to show people fleeing across Bondi Beach as gunshots rang out and police sirens sounded. Another video showed two men restrained by uniformed officers on a small pedestrian bridge, with police appearing to attempt to resuscitate one of them.
Emergency services were seen attending to multiple victims at the scene as investigations continued.
