The lawmaker representing Yagba East, Yagba West and Mopamuro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide, has commenced the distribution of food items and relief materials worth about N1 billion to widows and other constituents as part of activities marking the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The distribution exercise, which was officially flagged off at a ceremony, is aimed at supporting widows and vulnerable residents across the constituency.
Abejide noted that the initiative forms part of his annual humanitarian outreach, which he said has been consistently sustained for about nine years.
He explained that the distribution would cover all the 34 wards and polling units within Yagba Federal Constituency to ensure that residents are adequately supported during the festive period.
“The distribution of food items is my usual gesture. It will reach the 34 wards and all polling units across Yagba Federal Constituency so that our people can celebrate Christmas and the New Year. This initiative did not start today; it has been in existence for about nine years,” Abejide said.
According to the lawmaker, items earmarked for this year’s exercise include 24,000 bags of 5kg rice, 10,000 packs of 2kg garri, 10,000 six-yard wrappers for widows, in addition to salt, sugar and noodles.
Abejide said the intervention was motivated by his long-standing commitment to philanthropy and his desire to demonstrate genuine concern for widows and other vulnerable persons, particularly during festive seasons, in line with moral and religious principles.
The federal lawmaker also used the occasion to announce an upward review of his earlier pledge to support autonomous communities within the constituency.
He recalled that he had initially promised ₦5 million to each of the 71 autonomous communities but could not fulfil the commitment at the time due to the demands of his governorship ambition.
He disclosed that the pledge has now been increased to ₦10 million per community to facilitate community-driven development projects.
“By 2026, all the autonomous communities in Yagba Federal Constituency will benefit. A total of ₦710 million will be disbursed to support community development projects,” he said.
Abejide subsequently flagged off the distribution exercise and cautioned those overseeing the process to ensure equitable distribution across all wards and polling units, with particular attention given to widows and other deserving beneficiaries throughout the constituency.
