The Edo State Police Command has taken into custody a 49-year-old man in connection with the alleged killing of his 15-year-old son, whose body was reportedly buried secretly within their family residence.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Benin.
According to Ikoedem, the incident took place in Uhe community, located in Igueben Local Government Area of the state.
She explained that police action followed credible intelligence received on Dec. 6, prompting operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, to visit the suspect’s home where the allegation was subsequently verified.
The police spokesperson said preliminary findings indicated that the suspect allegedly assaulted the teenager with a stick on Dec. 5 at about 7:00 p.m., an act that reportedly resulted in the boy’s death.
“The suspect allegedly dug a grave within the family compound and secretly buried the corpse,” Ikoedem said.
She further disclosed that vital information was provided by the deceased’s grandmother, who is also the suspect’s mother. The 82-year-old woman resides in the same household and assisted investigators in uncovering the incident.
Ikoedem stated that after completing the required administrative procedures, officers exhumed the grave, photographed the scene and recovered the stick allegedly used in committing the offence as an exhibit.
She added that the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police in Edo, Monday Agbonika, had ordered that the matter be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
She said Agbonika cautioned against all forms of violence and urged residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
