At least four people were killed while three others sustained injuries following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on Baidi village in Tangaza local government area of Sokoto state.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication that monitors security developments in the Lake Chad region, reported that the assault took place at about 9:30 pm on Thursday.

According to the publication, security sources disclosed that the attackers, who were heavily armed, stormed the community in large numbers and operated for several minutes before withdrawing from the area.

Makama explained that reports of the incident were delayed due to a communication blackout in the village, which is situated close to the Niger Republic border.

Following the attack, troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, alongside police operatives and personnel of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps, were deployed to the affected area.

The publication added that the bodies of those killed, as well as the injured victims, were evacuated to a hospital for autopsy and medical treatment.

Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the assailants, with patrols intensified in neighbouring communities to reassure residents and prevent further attacks, Makama said.

The incident occurred barely a month after the United States carried out air strikes targeting camps linked to Islamic State-affiliated terrorists and Lakurawa groups in the state.

The air strikes, which were conducted on Christmas Day, were aimed at degrading terrorist networks operating along Nigeria’s north-western border corridor. However, details regarding casualties and the overall impact of the operation were not officially disclosed.

Meanwhile, Christopher Musa, minister of defence, has repeatedly expressed concern over Nigeria’s porous borders, noting that they continue to fuel insecurity across the country.
