A grassroots organisation within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed former National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday, praising his enduring reputation for principled leadership, integrity and commitment to democratic ideals.
In a congratulatory message released on Thursday, the APC Grassroots Governance Group (APC G3) described Akande as an exemplary figure whose political life reflects accountability, discipline and steadfast devotion to democracy — qualities the group said Nigeria urgently requires.
The group acknowledged Akande’s contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, noting that his efforts played a key role in strengthening democratic principles founded on truth, respect for popular will and effective governance.
The statement, signed by APC G3 National Coordinator, Amechi Chuks Oyema, highlighted Akande’s pivotal influence during the formation of the APC, where he emerged as the party’s pioneer National Chairman.
“His leadership and moral authority were central to the successful unification of diverse political tendencies under a progressive platform,” the group said, adding that Akande helped shape a party founded on reform, internal democracy and national purpose.
APC G3 also described the former Osun State governor as a statesman whose consistent commitment to integrity and accountability continues to offer guidance at a time when the nation is searching for credible leadership.
“Chief Akande’s life teaches that public office is a trust and that meaningful national progress can only be achieved through honesty and responsibility,” the statement read.
According to the group, the celebration of Akande at 87 is a recognition of his legacy, wisdom and selfless service to Nigeria’s democratic evolution, stressing that his principles remain vital to the country’s political growth.
Akande, a widely respected elder statesman and influential figure in Nigeria’s progressive political movement, turned 87 on Friday, January 16, drawing tributes from party members and democracy advocates nationwide.
