The Confederation of African Football has named Senegalese official Issa Sy as the referee for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria in Marrakech.

The decision follows CAF’s withdrawal of earlier appointee Omar Artan after concerns were raised over officiating controversies at the ongoing tournament.

Sy has already featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, having worked as the Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage fixture involving Morocco and Tanzania.

His appointment is expected to ease tension ahead of the crucial encounter, with both Nigeria and Algeria competing for a spot in the semi-finals.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles advanced to the last eight after recording a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria edged past DR Congo with a 1-0 victory after extra time.

Saturday’s match will also serve as a rematch of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, a contest Algeria won 2-1, sealed by a late free-kick from Riyad Mahrez.

The quarter-final is scheduled to kick off at 5pm Nigerian time.
