The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on Nigerians to show greater responsibility toward public infrastructure and actively safeguard facilities within their communities.
The minister made the appeal during the parade of three suspected vandals apprehended through the newly deployed CCTV monitoring system in Lagos.
According to reports by Lanre Gbeleyi, the suspects were caught in real time by the CCTV monitoring team while allegedly prying open 156 cat-eye reflective lights on the Third Mainland Bridge. The reflective lights are installed to improve road safety and enhance the aesthetic outlook of the bridge.
The suspects, who claimed to be scavengers popularly known as “Bola,” reportedly failed to provide coherent responses to questions posed to them during the parade.
While commending the police for their diligence, Umahi expressed concern over what he described as the indifferent attitude of some Nigerians toward public assets.
The minister also condemned what he termed the appalling level of indiscipline exhibited by Nigerians on the temporarily opened section of the coastal highway, an act which he said resulted in the death of a construction worker on the corridor.
Umahi directed the State Controller of Works to ensure that the suspects are prosecuted, while warning potential offenders that surveillance on the Third Mainland Bridge remains active and capable of preventing criminal activities.
