Civil servants working under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have declared an indefinite strike scheduled to commence on Monday, January 19, 2026, citing unresolved labour-related concerns.
The decision was taken by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), which instructed workers across all cadres within the FCT to suspend duties.
A notice stated that the industrial action will disrupt activities across FCTA secretariats, departments and agencies (SDAs), as well as area councils and parastatals.
JUAC explained that the strike followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum previously issued to FCTA management, alleging that the authorities failed to respond meaningfully to the unions’ demands.
Among the issues raised are the non-payment of outstanding wage awards, unpaid promotion arrears, delayed promotions, and the continued elongation of tenure for retired directors and permanent secretaries.
The unions also accused the administration of failing to remit pension and National Housing Fund (NHF) deductions, alongside complaints of poor working conditions, staff intimidation, and what they described as persistent neglect of workers’ welfare.
JUAC further raised concerns over what it termed a “mass failure” in the 2024 promotion examinations, noting that about 77.5 per cent of candidates were affected.
The directive, electronically signed by the JUAC Secretary, called on all FCT workers to fully observe the strike until the listed grievances are addressed.
As of the time this report was filed, the FCTA authorities had not issued any official response to the strike notice.
