A Nigerian national, Osemwengie Irorere, 46, has been shot and killed inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada.
It was gathered on Thursday that the incident occurred last Sunday at about 7 p.m. at the terminal located around the Yorkdale Road and Allen Road area of the city.
The Toronto Police Service, while confirming the incident on Wednesday, announced that a 40-year-old suspect, Tyrel Gibson, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
In a statement released by the police, it was stated, “On Sunday, January 4, 2026, at approximately 7 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in the Yorkdale Road and Allen Road area.
“It is alleged that the victim and the suspect both boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect shot the victim before fleeing the area on foot. Officers arrived at the scene and located the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were performed, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The suspect was located and arrested by officers a short time later, and a firearm was recovered. The victim has been identified as Osemwengie Irorere, 46, of Nigeria.”
Police authorities further disclosed that investigators had earlier announced the arrest of Gibson, who is a resident of Toronto.
“He has been charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., in room 105,” the statement added.
The killing comes barely two weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve.
Onetufo was reportedly discovered with stab wounds to his chest following a distress call to the police. Although paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police later confirmed that one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder has been formally charged in court.
