Sympathisers have raised more than N25 million for Haruna Bashir, a Kano resident whose wife and six children were killed in a tragic attack at his home last Saturday.
The victims were murdered at the family’s residence in the Dorayi Charanchi Quarters of the Kano metropolis, leaving Mr Bashir as the sole survivor of his immediate household.
The five-day fundraising drive was organised by Abba Hikima, a Kano-based legal practitioner, after public calls emerged for a coordinated effort to assist the bereaved father.
Mr Hikima had earlier highlighted the family’s situation in a social media post, appealing to government authorities and wealthy individuals to come to Mr Bashir’s aid, describing him as being in a difficult financial condition.
Providing an update on Friday via Facebook, Mr Hikima confirmed that the total amount raised had been formally handed over to Mr Bashir.
“Alhamdulillah. Within the past few days, we raised a total of N25 million, which was deposited into my account. Today, six days after the demise, I transferred this entrusted fund directly into the bank account of Malam Haruna Bashir,” Mr Hikima stated.
He added, “I provided him with a copy of my bank statement, after which we proceeded to his bank to secure the account to safeguard the money until things stabilise.”
According to the lawyer, part of the funds came from a parallel donation drive organised by another individual.
“Out of the total amount, N3,400,000 was contributed by Engr. Usman Ahmad Zun-Noorayne,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor Abba Yusuf pledged to sign death warrants for convicted killers.
The governor has also approved full sponsorship for Mr Bashir to perform Hajj and Umrah, in addition to providing him with a new house, welfare assistance, and support to remarry and rebuild his life.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when attackers invaded Mr Bashir’s home and killed his wife and six children.
Police authorities announced on Sunday that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings.
Governor Yusuf has since directed the state attorney-general and commissioner for justice to expedite the prosecution of the suspects.
