Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have killed several labourers and wounded others along the Maiduguri–Damboa–Biu Road in Borno State.

It was gathered that the attack occurred on Thursday at Wajirko village in Damboa Local Government Area. The victims were said to be local labourers engaged in efforts to restore a bridge earlier destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents.

Confirming the incident, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) expressed sympathy with the families of the labourers and soldiers killed during an encounter with Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters.

“Let me commiserate with the troops of Theatre Command North East Joint Task Force ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ (OPHK), members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and families of those killed during encounter with Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Sabon Gari village of Damboa local government area.

“I also sympathise with the people of Harang and other surrounding communities in Hawul Local Government Area, where some terrorists invaded and killed one person with destruction of houses and other property recently.

“I want to urge the military, especially troops of OPHK not to be deterred by these pockets of terrorists attacks, but to remain committed and steadfast in order to end the over 16-year war.”

Sources gave differing accounts of the casualty figure, with one saying more than 10 people were killed, while others put the number at over 20.

“Following the assault, ten of the deceased, identified as Muslims, were buried at the emir’s palace in Biu in accordance with Islamic rites,” one of the sources said.

According to sources, troops attempted to repel the attack, but significant damage had already been done before they engaged the insurgents.
