The University of Ibadan (UI ) has been named Nigeria’s leading institution in both Law and Medicine in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The rankings, obtained from the Times Higher Education website on Saturday, placed UI ahead of other Nigerian universities across the two disciplines.
In the Law category, the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were both listed within the 301–400 band, securing Nigeria’s representation among 425 leading law schools worldwide.
The evaluation was based on teaching quality, research output, international outlook and performance across constitutional, criminal, corporate and international law.
According to Times Higher Education, “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 reveal the world’s top universities for law.
The 2026 Law ranking evaluates excellence across: constitutional and administrative law; international law; commercial and corporate law; criminal law and justice; and legal theory and jurisprudence, among other topics.”
At the global level, Stanford University emerged as the top-ranked institution for law, particularly for teaching excellence.
On Medicine and Health-related disciplines, THE stated, “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 reveal the world’s top universities for medical and health subjects.
The 2026 Medical and Health ranking evaluates universities across medicine, dentistry, nursing and other healthcare disciplines.
Oxford takes the top spot for its outstanding performance in teaching, research and industry links. University of California, Berkeley joins top 10.
This year, we have evaluated 1,230 universities from 102 countries and territories, using the same 18 trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, recalibrated to suit medical and health fields.”
Within Nigeria, the University of Ibadan led the Medicine and Health ranking in the 301–400 band, followed by the University of Lagos in the 401–500 category.
Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, the University of Benin, the University of Jos and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were grouped in the 601–800 band, while Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ilorin appeared in the 801–1000 range.
Lagos State University and the University of Port Harcourt were listed among institutions ranked 1001 and above.
