Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has urged Venezuelans to adopt Islam, linking the call to recent political developments in the South American country.
Gumi made the statement in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday night while reacting to reports of the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday by United States forces.
According to the cleric, embracing Islam would strengthen Venezuela’s moral foundation and enhance its capacity to confront internal and external challenges.
He said: “Venezuelans should adopt Islam. That will give them the moral rectitude to leave drugs, and the courage to repel the Devil and imperial subjugation. Islam remains the only force that is a substitute for the current world’s injustice and hypocrisy.”
His comments come against the backdrop of Venezuela’s prolonged political and economic crisis, which has been marked by power struggles between the government and opposition forces, international sanctions, and accusations of foreign interference.
The country has also grappled with severe economic hardship, hyperinflation, migration pressures and allegations of drug trafficking routes passing through parts of Latin America.
The involvement of the United States in Venezuelan affairs, which saw to the capture of Maduro and his wife on Saturday has long been a source of tension, with Washington accusing the Maduro government of corruption, human rights abuses and narco-terrorism, while the Venezuelan leadership has consistently alleged attempts at regime change and imperial domination.
