The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that four women died in a road traffic accident involving four vehicles at Agulu Lake along the Nanka-Agulu Road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday night.
The Anambra Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday in Awka, attributing the crash to excessive speed and loss of control.
According to her, the vehicles involved were a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number HAL676YG, a shuttle bus marked UKP274YA, a trailer and a Toyota Hilux, both of which had no registration numbers.
“There were no eyewitnesses to the crash as all the drivers fled the scene.
“However, observations by the FRSC rescue team from the Nanka outpost indicated that the bus was descending the hill at high speed, lost control and rammed into three other vehicles,” she said.
Asekhauno stated that 19 persons were involved in the accident, including six male adults, 10 female adults and three male children.
“The crash claimed the lives of four women, while five others sustained injuries,” she added.
She said those injured were taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi, for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital morgue.
The sector commander noted that an alternative route was arranged to ease traffic congestion in the area following the incident.
She extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured quick recovery, while urging motorists to observe safety regulations.
“Drive safely to stay alive; safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she said
