President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an Army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly overnight attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists that left several villagers dead in Worro community.
The President directed that the new military formation will spearhead Operation Savannah Shield, a security offensive aimed at crushing terrorist elements, restoring calm, and protecting vulnerable communities in the area.
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Wednesday said, Tinubu condemned the attack as “cowardly and beastly,” describing the assailants as heartless for targeting defenseless civilians in their campaign of terror. He expressed outrage over the killing of villagers who reportedly rejected the extremists’ attempt to indoctrinate them.
According to the President, the victims had chosen to practice a form of Islam rooted in peace and dialogue rather than violence and extremism, a decision that made them targets of the attackers.
“It is commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promotes violence over peace and dialogue,” the President said.
President Tinubu further called for strong collaboration between federal and state security agencies to ensure relief is provided to affected residents and that the perpetrators of the attack are tracked down and brought to justice.
He offered prayers for the repose of the souls of those killed and extended his condolences to bereaved families, as well as to the people and government of Kwara State.
The directive underscores the federal government’s renewed resolve to confront terrorism and prevent the spread of insurgency into communities previously considered safe.
