Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare of Wolverhampton Wanderers has become the latest Premier League player targeted with racist abuse on social media, in what anti-discrimination advocates have labelled an “appalling weekend” for English football.

According to BBC, the forward received a barrage of racist messages after Wolves’ 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace. Arokodare had a first-half penalty saved before a late goal decided the match. Screenshots shared by the player and the club revealed several offensive messages sent from anonymous accounts.

Reacting on Instagram, Arokodare expressed disbelief that individuals could openly spread racism without consequences, insisting there is no place in football for such behaviour and urging collective action to hold offenders accountable.

Wolves condemned the abuse, describing it as “disgusting” and “abhorrent,” and pledged full support for the Nigeria international. The club confirmed it is collaborating with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible.

Arokodare was not the only victim. Sunderland AFC winger Romaine Mundle was also racially abused online following his substitute appearance in a 3-1 home defeat to Fulham FC. Sunderland denounced the messages as “vile” and “unacceptable,” stressing that the perpetrators do not reflect the club’s values or community. Reports say the 22-year-old has since deactivated his Instagram account.

The incidents came shortly after similar abuse was directed at Burnley FC midfielder Hannibal Mejbri and Chelsea FC defender Wesley Fofana following their teams’ 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Anti-discrimination body Kick It Out said the latest cases highlight the persistent nature of racism in the game, noting that such incidents occur far too frequently. The organisation called for meaningful action to follow the strong condemnations.

The Premier League also condemned the abuse, warning that offenders could face severe sanctions, including stadium bans and possible legal action.

Despite ongoing campaigns and partnerships aimed at tackling discrimination, racist abuse continues to plague English football, prompting renewed calls from players and clubs for firmer and more decisive measures.
