The All African Students Union (AASU) has conferred a Distinguished Award in Leadership and Service on former Zamfara State Governor and Senator, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, in recognition of his contributions to governance and development.

The award was presented during the inauguration of the union’s President, Comrade Osisiogu Osikenyi, at a colourful ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs auditorium in Accra, Ghana, over the weekend.

According to the organisers, the honour reflects Senator Yari’s record of service during his time as Governor of Zamfara State, his tenure as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), and his current role as a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Senator Yari, the union noted, is being celebrated across Africa as an icon of modern Nigeria, citing his contributions to humanitarian efforts, political development and critical infrastructural improvements as models for African leadership and mentorship.

The award was presented by leaders of the African Students Union, led by its President, Comrade Osisiogu Osikenyi from Nigeria; Deputy President, Maravilha Kapaia from Angola; Vice President, North Africa, Jaber Maataovi from Morocco; and Secretary General of the AASU, Divine Edem Kwadzodeh from Ghana.

Other award recipients included the President of the Republic of Ghana, Mr. John D. Mahma; Dr. Muhammad Ibn Chambers, Secretary General of the Pan African Women Organization (PAWO); Dr. Grace Majoro Kabayo from Uganda, Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, Sierra Leone; Dr. Walton E. Gilpin; as well as other distinguished personalities from across the African continent.

Speaking at the event, Senator Yari, who was represented by Hon. Garba Mohammed Gololo, expressed appreciation to the All African Students Union for the recognition and honour accorded to him and to Nigerians as a whole.

He said the Senator’s life is about service to humanity, adding that service to people should always be above self.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Senate Committee on Water Resources also urged African leaders to work collectively in the interest of the continent.

Addressing the gathering, he said that “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria is doing well and leading the Country to prosperity.”

He further advised other African leaders to emulate President Tinubu’s economic reform policies and efforts in the fight against terrorism.

“I believe that with leaders like Tinubu, Africa is indeed blessed,” he added.
