Troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intercepted a suspected gun runner and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in Taraba State.
The operation, which took place on February 21, 2026, was carried out by soldiers under the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army during a stop-and-search exercise at Sarkin Kudu in Ibi Local Government Area.
A statement signed by Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, said acting on credible intelligence, vigilant troops on sentry duty flagged down an Audi vehicle with registration number RBC 798 DV (Abuja).
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the arrest of the suspect from Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
According to the statement, recovered from the suspect were two AK-47 rifles; 197 empty magazines; one box of 7.62 x 51mm NATO ammunition containing 250 rounds; 14 packs of 9mm Parabellum ammunition containing 700 rounds; and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition — bringing the total ammunition haul to 969 rounds.
Other items found in the vehicle include ₦2,440,000 in cash, a wallet containing four different identification cards and four ATM cards, one Android phone, one Itel keypad phone, a power bank, eight bottles of perfume, one rechargeable touch light, and assorted local charms.
The statement said the suspect and the recovered items are currently in custody and are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, praised the troops for their professionalism and vigilance.
He said the Brigade must “maintain the tempo as it strives to fulfill the mandate given by the Chief of Army Staff, which is to rid Taraba State of all forms of criminality and threats to lives and property.”
The commander further stressed that the Brigade would sustain its reward and sanction policy.
According to him, “Officers and soldiers involved in the successful operation will be duly recognized and rewarded for their professionalism and commitment to duty.”
