Bandits have attacked a wedding ceremony in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing 13 people and abducting an unspecified number of residents.

The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday.

However, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Hassan Mansur, told journalists that the police were still gathering details and would issue a comprehensive report later.

“The command is yet to get full details of the incident that happened in Kahir community, but a comprehensive report will be made available after further findings,” he said.

A resident of Kagarko, Shehu Bala, who spoke to journalists, said the attack occurred around 11:47 p.m. on Sunday when the gunmen stormed the wedding venue and opened fire on guests.

He said the attackers, who arrived in large numbers and wielded AK-47 rifles, began shooting sporadically inside the hall where the ceremony was taking place.

According to him, several people who sustained gunshot injuries were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagarko, while two victims with severe injuries were referred to Kaduna for treatment.

“In fact, two of my friends who were inside the hall also sustained bullet injuries during the attack,” he said, adding that it was difficult to determine the number of people abducted because of the confusion caused by the shooting.

A community leader, who requested anonymity, also confirmed the incident and provided the names of some of those killed.

They include Bako Danjuma, Williams Luka, Peter Williams, Joseph Yakubu, Victor Peter, John Dan Asabe, Angulu Markus, Maikano Aribi, Douglas John, Ado Yakubu, Zaphaniah Alhaji, Joseph Kaddah and Francis Unguwa Doya.

The community leader said the bandits operated in the area for nearly an hour, during which they also looted some shops and carted away food items, provisions and drugs from a chemist’s store.

He added that the victims had been buried, while the community was yet to establish contact with the abductors.

“The entire community was thrown into panic because of the sporadic shooting that night. Some residents had to flee into the bush to escape,” he said.
