The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted comments made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding opposition concerns about the Electoral Act 2026.

Akpabio, speaking during a reception for the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday, said he felt reassured that the law was correct whenever opposition parties criticised it.

However, reacting in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said opposition parties do not raise objections without reason. The party argued that certain provisions in the new electoral law appear designed to weaken other political parties, undermine democratic principles, and damage Nigeria’s global reputation.

The party further stated that Akpabio’s role in the passage of the Electoral Act 2026 could attract strong criticism in the future, particularly over a controversial provision that removes certificate forgery as a basis for challenging election results.

According to the ADC, such provisions reveal what it described as the underlying motive behind the electoral amendments, suggesting they were intended to satisfy the ruling party and the presidency rather than strengthen democracy.

The party argued that legislative amendments should improve governance and reflect national aspirations. It maintained that passing laws that appear to weaken ethical standards contradicts the purpose of democratic governance.

ADC also questioned how lawmakers could support legislation that prevents election results from being challenged on the grounds of certificate forgery, as outlined in Section 138 of the Electoral Act 2026. It noted that this provision appears to conflict with sections of the Nigerian Constitution that disqualify individuals who present forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission from holding public office.

The party warned that such legislation could create constitutional inconsistencies and send a troubling message to citizens, especially young people, about accountability and integrity in public office.

While accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress of prioritising political interests over national values, the ADC said Nigerians would ultimately judge leaders based on their records rather than their criticism of opposition parties.

The party added that despite the remarks from the Senate President, it remains committed to building a credible political alternative focused on restoring integrity, competence, and accountability in Nigeria’s governance.
