Former Anambra governor, Peter Obi , has said Nigeria’s former Head of State, Sani Abacha, demonstrated more democratic tendencies than individuals who once identified as pro-democracy activists under the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress, made the assertion in a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account.
His remarks come amid ongoing developments within the party, particularly following recent court rulings and reactions from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to Peter Obi, “Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers. What a shame.
“What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights, who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha, now find themselves worse than the man they opposed.
“Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days.
“Power indeed reveals character.”
The comments follow actions by INEC concerning the ADC’s internal leadership dispute.
The commission recently removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as national chairman and national secretary of the party, respectively. It also declined to recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts.
In response to the leadership tussle and the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Suit No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, INEC announced it would suspend recognition of the affected officials and refrain from monitoring any conventions or congresses organised by their factions until the substantive case before the Federal High Court is resolved.
The ADC, however, has rejected INEC’s interpretation of the appellate court’s judgment regarding the dispute.
