Why Every Small Business Needs Legal Guidance, Support, and Community in Nigeria
By Queen Hassana Ozohu Salisu
In today’s Nigerian business environment, survival is no longer enough. Every entrepreneur must learn how to protect, structure, and strategically grow their business if they truly want longevity and success. According to Miss Nollywood International Queen Hassana Ozohu Salisu, one of the biggest mistakes many startups and small business owners make is operating without legal guidance or professional support.

Queen Hassana, who is also a businesswoman and the founder of Sallhassy A. Limited alongside several other ventures, recently opened up on the realities many young entrepreneurs face in Nigeria. Speaking passionately on the struggles of startups and emerging brands, she emphasized the importance of having legal protection and proper business structure from the early stages of any venture.
The Fear of Legal Services Among Small Business Owners
One major challenge facing many startups today is the fear of working with legal professionals. Most small business owners believe lawyers and legal teams are only interested in charging huge fees or exploiting them financially. Because of this mindset, many entrepreneurs avoid seeking legal advice entirely, leaving their businesses vulnerable to fraud, manipulation, and poor agreements.
According to Queen Hassana, this has become dangerous in today’s business world where many young entrepreneurs are desperate to survive and succeed. She explained that several dishonest CEOs and established individuals often take advantage of inexperienced entrepreneurs who lack proper guidance and legal understanding.
“Young entrepreneurs are full of dreams, strength, and ambition, but many are too trusting,” she explained. “Some people use their naivety for personal gain, leaving them with nothing if they do not detect the danger early.”
This is why she strongly encourages every business owner, regardless of size, to align with the law, understand contracts, and seek proper legal backup to secure their business future.
The Silent Struggles of Small Businesses in Nigeria
Starting and sustaining a business in Nigeria is not easy. Beyond the financial stress, many entrepreneurs battle lack of support, limited opportunities, poor mentorship, and unhealthy competition from bigger brands.
Queen Hassana pointed out that many established companies and influential CEOs already have platforms powerful enough to help upcoming entrepreneurs grow. Unfortunately, instead of mentoring and uplifting younger brands, many choose intimidation, suppression, or exclusion because they fear losing relevance or spotlight.
According to her, this has created a toxic business environment where young entrepreneurs struggle to gain visibility or access meaningful opportunities.
“Most small entrepreneurs do not get the support or encouragement they truly deserve,” she said. “The system is already difficult enough. Bigger brands should stop intimidating younger businesses who simply need opportunities and visibility to grow.”
She further explained that in many developed countries, startups receive support systems, grants, mentorship opportunities, affordable training programs, and access to communities that help businesses survive. However, in Nigeria, many entrepreneurs are left to figure everything out alone.
Business Summits Have Become Too Expensive for Average Entrepreneurs
Another issue Queen Hassana addressed was the growing cost of business seminars, masterclasses, and networking events in Nigeria. While these events are designed to educate entrepreneurs, many of them now come with extremely high registration fees that average small business owners cannot afford.
Ironically, these events are often hosted by already successful executives and corporate figures who have access to wealth, influence, and opportunities. Yet, the very people who need knowledge the most are financially excluded from participating.
“How can struggling entrepreneurs survive while also paying expensive fees just to gain business knowledge?” she questioned. “Many people genuinely want to learn, but they simply do not have the financial capacity.”
She believes business education and mentorship should become more accessible, especially for startups trying to survive in a harsh economy.
Nigeria’s Business System Is a War Zone
Queen Hassana described the Nigerian business environment as a “war of survival,” where only the strongest, smartest, and most resilient businesses manage to stay afloat.
According to her, many brilliant businesses have shut down not because they lacked talent or vision, but because they lacked support, mentorship, partnerships, funding opportunities, or strategic guidance.
Some entrepreneurs also suffer from poor branding, lack of market understanding, weak business planning, and inability to identify risks early enough.
In such an environment, community becomes essential.
The Need for Collaboration and Business Communities
Rather than competing destructively, Queen Hassana believes small and medium-scale entrepreneurs must come together to build communities focused on collaboration, education, investment opportunities, and sustainable growth.
She encourages business owners to surround themselves with people who provide insights, practical strategies, and honest conversations about business challenges and solutions.
According to her, entrepreneurs need communities where they can:
- Learn practical business growth strategies
- Understand risks and business protection
- Collaborate on investment opportunities
- Access mentorship and support
- Improve branding and visibility
- Gain digital and ICT knowledge
- Build long-term sustainability
She stressed that no entrepreneur succeeds completely alone and that business communities can help startups survive difficult seasons.
A Personal Journey of Resilience
As someone who has personally experienced setbacks, disappointments, and difficulties in business, Queen Hassana says she deeply understands the emotional and financial pressure entrepreneurs face daily.
However, despite the challenges, she remains optimistic and determined. She describes herself as someone who does not easily give up on goals once she has committed herself to them.
Her journey through entrepreneurship has strengthened her passion for helping young businesses grow smarter, stronger, and more prepared for the realities of the business world.
A Call to Young Entrepreneurs
Queen Hassana is now calling on startups, business owners, creatives, and entrepreneurs to become more open to learning, mentorship, and strategic business development.
She encourages young people to listen to advice, improve their branding, structure their businesses professionally, and position themselves for long-term success rather than short-term survival.
To further support entrepreneurs, she has created a Telegram community where interested individuals can access business insights, digital growth strategies, branding tips, investment opportunities, and discussions focused on helping businesses thrive.
