The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Oyewole Solomon, has died after reportedly collapsing during a party reconciliation meeting in Iyara.

Solomon was said to have slumped on Friday while the meeting was underway at Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.

Sources said he was attended to at the venue before being taken to a hospital in Kabba, where he was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.

The meeting was organised by a former chairman of Ijumu LGA, Funsho Olumoko, as part of efforts to settle disagreements among party members, reconcile opposing camps and strengthen unity ahead of subsequent political activities.

The previous meeting had reportedly ended without an agreement following disagreements linked to the party’s leadership in the local government. The development allegedly led Solomon, some party stakeholders and senior government officials to walk out of the gathering.

Friday’s meeting was subsequently convened to address the differences, with political leaders, ward and local government executives, women and youth leaders, as well as government appointees representing the 15 wards of Ijumu, expected to participate.

Reacting to the death, Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, and Hon. Salman Idris, representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, mourned the APC chairman.

The lawmakers described Solomon as a dedicated party member and grassroots mobiliser who contributed significantly to the development of the APC in Ijumu and Kogi West.

“He was a bridge builder, a man of peace, and a grassroots politician who believed in the ideals of the APC. His commitment, dedication and loyalty to the party were exemplary.

“His death is a painful loss not only to his immediate family and Ijumu LGA, but to the entire APC family in Kogi State,” Senator Karimi said.

As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, had yet to respond to inquiries concerning the incident.
