A Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer, identified as Joseph Ali, has died following an accidental discharge from a locally fabricated rifle at his residence in Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Friday in Compensation Layout, Old Kutunku, Abuja, as Ali was preparing to leave for work.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, a police signal indicated that a distress call was received after the firearm accidentally discharged while the officer was handling it.
According to the report, Ali had dressed for work and was about to leave his residence when he picked up the locally made rifle, which he reportedly used for community security, to conceal it before departing.
He was, however, said to have been unaware that the rifle was cocked.
“In the process of picking it, the rifle discharged, with the pellets hitting him on the left eye,” the signal stated.
The incident reportedly happened in the presence of Ali’s wife and children.
Following the shooting, the immigration officer was rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) for medical attention.
However, a doctor on duty reportedly examined him and confirmed that he had died.
“Victim is taken to UATH where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead,” the signal stated.
His body was thereafter deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending an autopsy.
The matter has been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCB) for further investigation, according to the police report.
Further details are expected from the authorities as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal firearm discharge.
