President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the Hausa people as an important pillar of Nigeria’s development, praising their enduring contributions to the nation’s unity, culture and economic growth.
The President made the remarks in a message marking World Hausa Day, where he celebrated the rich heritage, resilience and global influence of the Hausa people.
Tinubu noted that the Hausa language has grown beyond its traditional boundaries to become a major language of communication, commerce and cultural exchange across Nigeria and other parts of the world.
“The Hausa language, without doubt, has flourished and has become a major language of unity and commerce across the world,” the President said.
He also congratulated the Hausa community on the celebration, noting that this year’s event was being held at the historic Daura Palace in Katsina State.
The 2026 celebration, themed “Our Culture, Our Future,” focuses on preserving the Hausa language, traditions and cultural identity for future generations.
The event at the palace of the Emir of Daura attracted traditional rulers, scholars, cultural advocates and other dignitaries, reflecting the growing significance of the annual celebration.
Beyond the physical gathering in Daura, the World Hausa Day movement has continued to expand through digital platforms and international cultural initiatives, with Hausa scholars, university departments, journalists and activists playing key roles in promoting the language globally.
World Hausa Day was initiated on August 26, 2015, by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari, with the aim of increasing the use of Hausa online and drawing attention to challenges confronting the language.
Jari encouraged Hausa speakers to use the language on social media by sharing traditional proverbs, creating Hausa expressions for emerging concepts and technologies, and showcasing aspects of Hausa culture and traditions.
What began as a digital campaign has since evolved into an annual global celebration, bringing renewed attention to the preservation, promotion and continued development of the Hausa language and its cultural heritage.
